Context

Sustainable agriculture is pivotal in meeting society’s present food and textile needs, without compromising the well-being of future generations.

With this in mind, our team set forth to help both rural and urban farmers increase their yield, while using less resources and producing less waste. The pilot test was conducted at Fair Farms in Cambodia, a fair trade and organic-certified company specialising in growing Kampot pepper. The project took place off-grid, without internet connection or power.

Challenge

Fair Farms were struggling to grow quality vanilla, as achieving the perfect level of greenhouse humidity and temperature is a complicated affair.

To create an ideal environment, AI & machine learning were implemented to regulate their greenhouse, automate their fanning, misting, and dripping systems, and optimise their resources based on historical data.

Outcomes

  • The successful automation of cooling, misting, and dripping systems, all grounded in a multi-language, touch-screen application with simple controls.
  • An in-depth understanding of challenges via the pilot test, paving the way for future deployment in similar systems.
  • Our solution was designed for inclusivity—affordable to all and available to everyone. Our primary goal moving forward is continuing to reduce cost and energy consumption, opening the doors for further adoption.
